Crowdsourcing sometimes makes me sad

The Who asked fans to submit music videos for 5.15 (IMNSHO, the greatest rock song ever).

The Who are inviting filmmakers and animators to unleash their creativity and submit a music video that does for the track what the film did for the album. The video should reflect the 1960s ‘Mod Culture’ and show inspiration from the musical and visionary journey portrayed in that era. The winning video will be produced as the official video for ‘5.15’.
Here’s the winner, “…my interpretation of The Who’s Quadrophenia album set to the song ‘5:15’”:

So the guy who didn’t follow the assignment gets the win? I’m all for coloring outside the lines, but using 5.15 as background music for a creative homage to Quadrophenia is, well, bullshit.

The other submissions weren’t any better. A note to the younger generation from someone who failed to die before he got old: Black and white footage, prop scooters and moody environmental scenes don’t reflect the Mod Culture. I mean, did any of you actually watch Quadrophenia, not that it’s all that watchable? Sexual tension, violence, self-hatred, and aimlessness were the currency of the day. Point, missed.

Well, maybe the Universal Music Group’s marketing team will steer the final video in a better direction. Or not.

A great songwriter. Her music was on a loop in my car all weekend.

Today, musical performers from Kanye West to Yo Yo Ma are called “eclectic.” Laura Nyro was eclectic before people used the word to talk about pineapple salsa.

Let’s end the night with this.

Lambchop – “Give It”. Still regretting missing this show.

Spoek Mathambo - Control

Endtroducing was “well rounded”? More than that, I’d call it a perfect album.

The Tom Waits/Cookie Monster mashup. Genius.
